UK National Shipping Salute to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Portia are happy to see that Peel Ports Group has joined the national shipping salute to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The initiative, organised by the UK Chamber of Shipping and supported by the Department for Transport and UK Major Ports Group, will see ports across the U.K. encourage vessels in their harbour to sound a long blast on their horn or whistle, at 12 noon on Saturday 4th June.

Peel Ports Group will be promoting the event across its network of locations by asking mariners to create a fanfare of celebration from vessels at the Port of Liverpool to London Medway, Heysham, Great Yarmouth, Clydeport and Dublin.

Alongside the salute, employees, mariners and seafarers have all been encouraged to display congratulatory messages in celebration of the historic occasion.

Additionally, a special fleet of 100 vessels will sail the River Medway on 4th June as part of a four-hour jubilee event, in which the ports group is delighted to support in its role as Statutory Harbour Authority.

Colin Jones, Portia’s General Manager, said: “Queen Elizabeth’s reign has coincided with some of the most significant changes in the maritime sector from Containerisation through automation and the digital age of smart ports and the drive for greener operations.”

“It is great to see this unique event celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and the sound of all these vessels across U.K. ports on the 4th is something that is going to be remembered.”

“The maritime community in the UK has successfully developed  over its long history and particularly through past 70-years and is looking forward to sustained growth in  the future.”
